According to the Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation Blepharospasm is a neurological condition characterized by forcible closure of the eyelids or twitching of the eyes. Blepharospasm is any abnormal blinking, eyelid tic, or twitch.

Hemifacial spasm is a condition involving muscles on only one side of the face which may include the eyelid. It is usually caused by irritation of the facial nerve.
