Upper Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty: Upper Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid surgery, is a procedure to restore a more youthful, healthy appearance. Eyelid Surgery has become an incredibly popular procedure for both men and women, mainly due to the simplicity of the procedure, and realization of immediate, effective results.

The Problem

Eyes are a major component in your overall appearance, largely due to the fact that your eyes are often the first thing that people notice about you. Unfortunately, even with a good night’s sleep, loose skin over your eyes can make you look tired, and appear older than you really are.

Common issues

As excess eyelid tissue begins to form, there are many issues that may result. This can include:

Eyelid tissue is the actually the thinnest skin on our bodies, so it tends to stretch very easily. As we age and skin becomes more elastic, this effect will become amplified.

As your eyelids become more and more elastic, the discomfort experienced will begin to affect your life in a larger way.

At Barry Wasserman M.D. we can help you regain the function and appearance of the eyelids that you desire. Dr. Wasserman can effectively create a natural, youthful appearance, helping you to look as young as you feel.

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis can appear at birth, or develop with age. Often with young congenital ptosis, patients will exhibit early side effects such as the tilting of the head. This is done to compensate for the loss of vision.

If left unattended, the effects of ptosis will continue to affect your vision and appearance as you grow older. Other negative symptoms include difficulty keeping your eyes open, eyestrain, and fatigue when reading.

Surgery is recommended to correct ptosis in most child and adult patients. The procedure is very minimal, and simply requires a shortening of the muscle that opens the eyelid. This will lead to both increased function, and appearance. This is especially important for young patients, as a visual distortion can have serious implications on regular brain development, and long term learning ability.

Does insurance cover the eyelid surgery?

In many cases, eyelid sag and ptosis can be covered by insurance. This of course will depend on your coverage, however, if vision is being blocked, most insurance companies will make some contribution to the procedure.
